Post Help to remove outside door handles on 40 pickup

Hello- I am new to truck restorations but have done several frame off car restorations.Currently a friend and I are restoring 2 1940 ford 1/2 tons.My friends truck has been in his family since new but I purchased mine in 2008.The question I have is how do you remove the outside door handles. It appears that there should be a clip on the shaft or something but with the limited viewing in this area we cannot see a pin or anything that is holding it.If someone has tackled this problem we would really appreciate your help. Thanks Gord

Well, I haven't tried it yet but the way I understand it, you hold the inside door handle all the way in the open position and the outside handle should pull out. It may be hard but wiggle it around and it should pull out.

Sorry Gord, but I have to give credit where it's due. There is another member called Elder Rodder that I found by doing a search on this forum about door handles, he is the one that posted this answer a few pages back. You can find an enormous amount of information about these trucks by searching the forum this way.

door handle removal

Hello and welcome to the site. The door handles pull out real easy, get someone to hold down on the inside handle and pull the outside handle straight out.Likely have to wiggle them a little bit but no prying ,beating, hammering etc required.Have fun rebuilding that 40.Gord

'40 PU Outside Door Handle Removal

Hi Folks,

Happy to know that my post helped you with your outside door handle removal. Someone at Ford had an interesting mind to come up with that Chinese finger puzzle of a setup. Quite brilliant, actually. I worked a long time, and very carefully, before I figured it out.

Regards,

Elder Rodder

Hi Little 40,

Yes, the youngsters need a lot of help. They should be born with a Ford "Greenbook" in their hand. I'd like to go back and do it all over again, it's been such great fun. Half way to 69 and still going strong. Hard to imagine our trucks are 70 this year.

How's your PU going? I take a look at your gallery from time-to-time, but haven't noticed new pictures of it. It's time to take another look, maybe I missed something. Take care of yourself, I remember you had some heath issues awhile back that were keeping you from working on your truck.

I should ask you a quick question about the noise in my doors. Do you know how to keep the linkage quiet in the opening mechanism? Mine rattle unless they're in the lock position, and then there's tension on them to keep them quiet. My wife suggested using rubber bands to stop the rattle. I might try that as a last resort. Also, my windows rattle in the open position. If I have them closed from the halfway point they get better, to no noise at all when they're all the way up. There are new runners and felts, but noisy all the same. Only the hooked end and the bent around part at the ends of the runners, the way they were from the factory. Have you ever heard of bonding the ends so they don''t move back and forth? Almost silent running with windows up and handles in the locked position, only the exhaust and wind noise. I'm trying to get that with everything open and unlocked. Seems like a small thing, but at this point in the finished state, it's the next step in the refining process. My rodder buddies said to just get louder pipes. Typical rodders...

Regards,

Elder Rodder
