two interesting issues

Hey everyone i have a 1997 f250 powerstroke and i have two problems. My fuel filter oring (the one at the top where the lid screws on) at some point swells up and will no longer fit correctly in the housing. I've tried several orings and the only differance is the time it takes for them to swell. As far as i can tell it doesn't leak diesel, but i think it may be letting air in the system. My second problem has to do with a nut that goes to the thread on the oil pan above the starter (is this a return for the turbo?) it loosens every now and then and i can tighten it and it stops leaking for about a month or so. I'm sure i can just put some thread locker on the thread and it work.

i think its normal for the o-ring to swell if its not letting diesel out when under pressure with the motor running then i realy doubt its letting air in. on the second issue maybe try some thread locker

I'm not sure if i'd use threadlocker on the filter lid. Those lids are a pain to get off the way they are. Make sure you don't have any hairline fractures in the lid or housing.

Your second problem sounds like your oil dipstick tube is working itself out. A little dab of threadlocker should do the trick there.

There are some replacement fuel filters with the lid attached that are known to leak.
If you used this style filter I hope you kept the old lid. I personally use the drop-in filter because of this.

Also, It wouldn't be the first time that someone forgot to remove the old o'ring...
Be sure you only have one o'ring.
Is the o'ring installed with the small side up? It's tapered.

The oil leak near the starter may be your dipstick tube. There are many articles here on FTE about it.
It's a packing nut style seal. Look here:

Do not remove the nut...some parts may drop into the oil pan causing a really big repair.

make sure your fuel filter lid does not have to 0 rings around it. and also check for cracks on the lid.
and if it is your dipstick nut leaking, i would back off the nut as far as you can without taking it off. then get your RTV and put a bead around the backside of the nut and tighten it. that should stop the nut from comming loose and help stop any leaks.
