Swollen nuts!!!!

My ford origonal lug nuts are swelled and the wrench won't fit on. I guess they corroded under the stainless sleeve. Ford want's $8.58 a nut. Ford in canada wants $15.00 a nut. No way. What nut should I look for at what auto parts? Anyone have this problem???

If the nuts are still hexagonal as opposed to round, seems to me that carrying and using a 4-way wrench or a slightly bigger 6-point socket would be way cheaper than buying new lug nuts....

Try doing what I do on the '87 Bronco----use metric sockets. I think I have to use both a 21mm and a 22mm on all the various lug nutz. Stupid and caveman-ish---but cheap. Just take a Sharpie to each one and mark them accordingly so you're not fumbling around like Stevie Wonder looking for the light switch.......

Thanks for the idea, but it's the tire dealer that told me about it. I am thinking about going to plain steel black nuts. I'm not sure if some are better or stronger than others. I guess I'll take one off and try to match it at a parts store. I'm sure they are 13-16's. and the wrench barely goes on. Black or plated should look ok.

With all due respect, no thanks. A tire dealer is not going to fumble around looking for a socket that may fit. The stainless caps are mucked up already. I hear this is common with caps, and much worse with after market nuts. Thanks anyway.

Wow, so he always has the right one in his hand before you even pull into his driveway? You do realize, doncha, that the geniuses at Ford started building vehicles using half SAE and half Metric fasteners? My '87 Bronco, my '92 F250 and my '97 F350 all suffer from this disease.

just trying to help you there Son, but you can do what ever you want......

It has been my experience that lug nuts sometimes get their corners "smeared" a tad and a tight wrench will not fit around them but a looser wrench will. Again, it is really not a big deal to just find a slightly larger socket that will fit them. Most 4 way wrenches have a bit more latitude, and if you have metric and regular 4 ways, you will likely find something almost perfect.

Your lug nuts may be metric. I know that 97 up F150's went to a 135 mm bolt pattern (diverging from vans like mine that are still 5 on 5.5) and they may have gone to metric lug nuts at the same time.

I didn't say this earlier, but the prices your dealer quotes for lug nuts are highway robbery. 10 bucks apiece? This is nuts.

nuts on the F150 should be 14 mm thread. Normally you can use a 13/16 socket or a 22 mm socket. THe 13/16 is tight on some of the shielded nuts. I fyou dont want to use a different socket, go to Auto Zone and get a new box of nuts, about $10 for each wheel (set of 5).
