HELP! Starter keeps running

I have a '73 Ford Maverick and the starter keeps running after the engine starts... I replaced the ignition switch, but it happened again! Now replacing solenoid relay and considering wiring separate start switch (goes to solenoid relay). I suspect the mechanical parts of steering column that operate the ignition switch (eveything else works fine as long as I don't turn the key all the way to start position). Two questions: can it possibly be the starter itself? where is the best place to "tap" in a "hot" lead for the start switch... fuse box, or directly at battery lead using a "fuse link". I'm very handy with electrical, but want to do this right. I just hope my ring gear on flywheel is OK, can't let this happen again!!!

HELP! Starter keeps running

I just realized that I will have to tap into the neutral safety switch to wire the start switch (I am leaving the rest of ingition switch wiring intact). There are 4 wires (two for neutral safety function, two for backup lights), but I don't know which are for the start circuit (I know, I'm ordering a full wiring diagram). I belive the problem with the factory ignition switch is because of excessive pressure neede to over come the return spring in start position (key all the way forward) is causing the sloppy mechanical linkage in the column (from key lock to switch) to malfunction. Eveything else works fine and no problems if I turn the key to run position and use a "jumper" to activate the relay from under the hood. That's why I want to wire my own start switch (momentary push button). Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be clear about the situation.

HELP! Starter keeps running

Take the starter off and lubricate the starter drive gear shaft on the bendix .
Attach the power to the connector by Booster cables to run the starter a few times before re-installing it.

Red to Postive post > Black to the starter casing<

The car has obviously been sitting a while without being started.

HELP! Starter keeps running

Dennis, I appreciate your advice but I don't think you understand... I have been driving the car all along! It starts just fine (with a jumper from battery to "S" on relay). The problem is that AFTER the engine starts, the starter moter keeps running... only way to stop it is disconnect the battery lead (dangerous because it sparks). The last time this happened, I turned the key off, removed the key, and the damned thing still ran, so did the engine! Doesn't happen evey time, in fact no problems since starting with a jumper. The starter is lifetime warranty, but I assume it will work when put on a test bench so they might not replace it. I realize a Maverick isn't a truck, but I hope this helps any owners of older ford trucks... it's a frightening experience, to say the least!

HELP! Starter keeps running

Why not just replace your worn out ignition switch?

Oh, I understand all-right it has happened to me a couple of times.
Just check these :
1)Starter Drive shorting out !
2)Bendix Stuck > Remove starter and grease shaft.
3)Starter solenoid shorting out(stuck in closed position).
4)Check for power to starter solenoid connection that goes to the starter with the key in run position and motor running.
*If there is power there, that will confirm the solenoid is bad.

Get another one,they're cheap.

**Recommendation !
Just remove the starter and check it out for piece of mind.
Have Fun,
Dennis

HELP! Starter keeps running

Thank you for the advice! I've installed the new "soleniod"(relay) and wired a separate start switch (with a fuse link directly to battery... left the fuse box alone!) Also, as I mentioned, the ignition switch assembly is new, and adjusted properly, but the keylock/gear/linkage in the column is suspect. Everything works great now, but going to have starter checked anyway. This experience has got me looking more carefully at the entire electrical system... going to replace all fuse links and some wiring harnesses while I'm at it. Thanks again.
