Emblem removal help (1988, old glue, HELP!)

(This post is being added to the "Paint and Bodywork" as well as "Appearance & Dress-Up" sections.)

Ive just removed the old plastic emblems from my full sized 1988 Bronco. The emblems them selves came off fine, but im left with a thick black residue. It isnt sticky like glue, just rough and dry. Ive tried scrapping it off but after nicking the paint in one spot I dont want to try that again. Right now I have Goo-Off soaking in on the one side and WD40 on the other. I just read on another site to try using a credit card instead of a scrapper because it wont dig into the paint as far.

I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or if anyone had removed these and knows exactly how to get the gunk off.

Here are some photos to show what im dealing with:
Rear Ford logo, very thick gunk
Passenger side, ive used Goo-Off and a rag, it hasnt gotten me far
Attempting to show the thickness. Hard to see it in the picture. Its about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch thick

heat gun. And "Oooops". Just be careful with the heat gun, not to damage the paint. I detailed over 40 broncos and some I had to remove emblems to polish around them.

Once you apply heat you can rub the black off with ur fingers or pull it off (yes its hot). Or use the stem of a toothbrush and rub it off with that.. Then apply OOOPS to the glue left over.

Plastic scraper/putty knives work pretty good with a solvent to soften first. 2 or 3 pack is only a couple of bucks, and don't damage paint. You can use a fairly heavy nylon fishing line with a sawing motion to cut through adhesive to remove emblems too.

You can get an "eraser wheel" from a body repair store or maybe even from the local parts stores. Try adhesive remover. Just be careful with an eraser wheel that you don't burn your paint.
