if you look at the original it has a ridge on the body to hold the "O" ring in that area when the hose attachment goes back on to keep it from moving.
The newer one has a gasket molded around it and when installed it will leak not being thick enugh, has anybody run into this with there 96 - 7.3 and how did you solve the problem? I just reinstalled the original.
now if you remove the gasket on the new thermostat it looks like this.
nothing like the original and if I put it in the pocket where it fits and install the "O" Ring it does not have the lip on the body to keep the gasket from moving. I havent tried doing a install and check for leaks this way I dont want to chance it poping the "O"Ring and doing damage to the motor.
Any sugestions?????
Thanks Don

I'm not sure if I see the difference in your picts but if it don't fit......must be the wrong part. Sorry, I'm not helping much. I do know that the therm housings are prone to leaking and rusting through. If you're having trouble sealing it up, maybe it's the housing?
I am not aware of any seal changes in the stats other than depending on who makes the stat. the only change I am aware of is the 94.5-95 us a 203* short stem and the 96-up use a 195* long stem.
Thanks for the information and web site, mine uses the long stem type thermostat, as for the Thermostat housing mine in in new condition no rust, dents, or greese, I get my cooling system flushed by Ford every two years and I use coolant rejuvinating liqued every other year between flushes, so my cooling system is a 10, and 10 being best.
I will probably order a new housing to have on the shelf, along with the new thermostat.
Again Thank you.
