Question Starter Removal

Trying to remove the starter on my '66 240. Parts catalogs say it is a three bolt starter. I found two bolts easily. Where is the third?

I removed the nearest bolt in the bell housing and this loosened the starter, but I can't get it off. Do I need a bigger hammer?

I DO need a manual, but is there someone out there who can tell me how to get this sthing off right now?

Well, first off I can't read the parts book anymore. Why do they print that stuff so small? NumberDummy would have told me a 240 six manual shift carried a TWO bolt starter.

Then, it WAS diffucult to get off. I don't have enough experience with some of this stuff to know when to be gentle and when to get out the bigger hammer. In this case, it was the bigger hammer.

The flywheel and the starter were becoming one. Well, actually, the starter was become one pile of shredded metal. Nice part is, NAPA was open this afternoon and had the starter IN STOCK. The guys behind the counter have been around awhile, so they are still more helpful than just the computer screen. I appreciate that.

To my knowledge all old Ford engines had a two bolt starter with the exception of the "FE" engine family which has three. And let me tell you from experience the top bolt is a real pain to get on and off.

My new 4.6L has a 3 bolt starter as well.
