When did Ford convert to the roller blocks in trucks?
I have a 93 F-150 with a 5.0 liter. I bought a Crane CompuCam with flat tappets. I was going to have my engine rebuilt, but the machine ship told me I might have a roller cam. I thought Ford didn't switch to the roller blocks until later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Also if any one has installed an aftermarket cam in their 5.0 truck, what were your impressions?
When did Ford convert to the roller blocks in trucks?
According to what I have read in my trusty chilton's manual. The trucks got roller cams in 94. But my question is why would Ford keep producing two seperate blocks for almost 10 years?
Sounds like somebody needs to do some digging on this subject. I may have to end up taking my intakes back off to fix another oil leak, so if I do, I'll find out whether or not the top end of the 91 block in my truck is drilled & tapped for the spider assembly.

When did Ford convert to the roller blocks in trucks?
'93 5.0l trucks were roller motors..i do believe that the crown vics and econoline vans and probably exploders that had 5.0l had the flat tappet motors in them.........but i'm not the expert but you could call your local dealership and ask what cam goes into your vehicle or call ford motorsports........their catalog shows several variations to the 5.0 short block including the flat tappet block
When did Ford convert to the roller blocks in trucks?
All 1985 and later 5.0 truck motors will accept roller cams. They are all roller blocks after 85. Ford was going to install roller cams in 84 but had piston skirt problems, again? (Remember the Boss 302 problem in 69?)
This information is in a book by Tom Wilson, "How to build and Modify Ford fuel-injected 5.0-liter V-8 engines" I found the book to be very informative.
When did Ford convert to the roller blocks in trucks?
I do know that from around '85 and on Ford used roller cams in their 5.0 engines for passenger cars such as crown vic, thunderbird, mustang. I am not aware if Ford did the same with the Truck engines. I would assume that Ford used the same setup on the 302s. Although I dont know, being that a Truck takes a bit more brute. I would think that the roller setup would last longer though.
