The blocks are the exact same, save for some minor upgrades when Ford droped the 3.00" crank in. All diminsions are the same. When Ford went to the 302 in '68 they increased the length of the bores to help accomodate the longer stroke.
Keep in mind that during the 289 run Ford switched from a 5 bolt to a 6 bolt bellhousing patteren. I have been told that you can interchange between the two with mods, but I do not know if this is true or how hard it would be.
The only other major upgrade to the blocks was when they put in a roller cam in '80's. The roller lifters require a taller lifter bore.
if you have an early 289, with 5 bolt bellhousing, you will have to change the trnsmission to one with a 6 bolt pattern( the bell housing on c-4 is removable4.
also, the early 289's had some oiling problems, small oil galleys i think.
for what it's worth, if you are restoring, the 302 is not an original item
additionally for what it's worth, I drove a 289 mustang with aod overdrive tranny, and it made a great difference in the cars power range.
