Does the inside show any signs of undercoating being blown through (as in covering up rust)? Where do you live? Let us know your dealer experience! maybe you bought a Flood Car, plenty were shipped up to "unsuspecting" parts of the country after the floods in New Orleans and Houston!!

It has rust and shows signs of being mudded, but came clean on carfax. According to carfax this vehicle has spent its whole life in upstate SC. The dealer seemed honest and fixed about three things I found, but it is a used car salesman...
Is the pic looking at the bottom of the differential? I'm lost. If so, it looks to me as if there was contact with concrete, as in going over a barrier and being drug along enough to wear a hole, which was then filled with 'something'.
But, back to the question, no, it is not normal.

Yes it's the rear differantial housing. A co-worker picked at it and nothing came off. He said he didn't think it was a big deal, and he advised cleaning it up and filling it with JB weld.
I dont quite understand exactly where it is. Maybe if you mark the spot so that it can be easily seen and take another picture from further away so that its exact location could be seen.
The rear end is holding fluid. None is leaking out Sorry I didn't make that clear. My co-worker said the same thing that it may be just a flaw in the housing casting
