Is tow-haul different on the 6.4 than on the 6.0?

#2 son has a new (5,700 miles) 2008 F-450 dually 4x4 with the 6.4 and 4.30 gears and he says when he's in tow-haul he doesn't get any engine braking. He's driven/towed with my 2005 F-350 6.0 and likes the way my tow-haul holds speed on down-hill runs, but he says his truck has no braking action unless he rides the brakes, but even then it doesn't hold the speed like my truck does on the same hills with the same trailer and load (his WW toy hauler w/6 quads). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o></o>

He's had the truck in a couple times but his dealer doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong, so he's getting pretty frustrated. He's also only getting 10 mpg empty, 8 towing, so he's frustrated about that too. They just re-flashed his computer Wednesday, but still no engine braking - he hasn't driven far enough to know if his mileage has improved.<o></o>

<o></o>

Any input on the tow-haul would be appreciated.<o></o>

Everyone have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!<o></o>

my f550 works about the same as my old 06 6.0. It does not seem as good, but it is close.

Tow haul on our F450 ambulance works fine. It seems to be more refined and smoother than the 04s we have.

As far as the MPG, it's an F450 with 4.30 gears, what did he expect. It's diesel, not nuclear.

Did you ever resolve the tow/haul issue? I have an 08 F450 5spd auto with 4.88 LS rear. Twice on a recent trip while towing a 9 ton trailer at night on wet road, the tow haul allowed the truck to accel while going down a steep grade to the point I had to brake. On the first instance, when I applied the brakes, the dash skid alert (TCS) illuminated and the transmission disengaged from the engine (freewheeling). After an eternity the transmission reengaged with a bang and I had engine breaking. On the second instance, the same scenario except after breaking the transmission never reengaged and I manually braked to the bottom of Sylvan pass. Only after stopping at the base to change my shorts did the 1st 3 gears reengage which allowed me to limp into Cody, Wy. The truck's in the shop. The trans has a couple of scoured disks but no explanation given as to why the tow/haul control gave up. Anybody else have a similar experience?

Thanks. Should know the final word on the xmission repairs next wk. As for the Tow/Haul control everybody's scratching their head. I'm told the electrons CK ok. Hope I don't have to take it on the road to repeat the scenario...twice was enough.

I don't have any experience with a 6.0L but just used tow/haul for the first time in my 6.4L. Towing a 14K lb toyhauler through the lower Appalachia, the truck maintained speed even down a 7% 5 mile grade. When I had cruise control set to 65 mph, that's the speed it maintained downhill. With cruise at 70 mph, that's the speed it maintained. Overall I was pretty impressed with the feature.

Hope you get yours fixed soon (and right)!

I noticed that my 6.4 was smoother when using tow haul and not as obvious at it was in the 6.0.
