What is the best sounding exhuast for a 300? How would the stock manifold one cat and straight pipe sound. It is a 1982. What is everybody running and what does it sound like. I want loud. I like the popping and crackling of straights but i dont want a whole lot of bumble bees some are alright though. thanks

Hey, tonight (May 22) I just got the exhaust on my 87 300 I6 to sound the way I wanted it to, LOUD! What I started out with was a dual cat back with a Y and straight pipes back to 2 31/2" black pwder coated muffler tips (glasspacks). I was pretty dissapointed after I put it on bacause it was so quiet. So the next thing I did was Knock out the rear cat on my truck (87-96 trucks have two converters), this sounded good until I bolted my pies back on. Then tonight I put on 31/2" X 22 angle cut chrome tips Just to make my truck look better. Not only does my truck look better it sounds like a v8. I still cannot believe that the two glasspack tips made my exhaust that quiet. I would reccomend going this way, dual or single. And since you only have one cat it will sound really good. The chrome tips that I put on have a cool echo to them. I can't wait to show my buddies tomorrow.

Ford man #####: You have two cats (one for each manifold) on your truck? Was this a custom job? How may O2 sensors do you have?

I am running one cat into a muffler with dual out...would LOVE to make dual cats with dual mufflers (or no mufflers at all)...but wonder if the EEC would be screwed up by the O2 sensor...who knows...

The two cats that I have on my truck are factory. Both cats are in series. The first cat takes the two pipes from the manifold and then singally runs 3" to the second cat which is 3" in and 21/4" out. I knocked out the rear cat. I have one O2 sensor and what i think is an air tube going the the 3" pipe between the cats. To sum up what I have is basically factory manifolds. factory cats (one hollow),a Y pipe, straight pipes to the bumper, and 31/2"X24" chrome angle cut tips. Since you only have one cat any ways all you will need to do is have the Y pipe, straight pipes and the tips(if preferred). My truck sounds awesome, it turns heads everywhere. Let us know if you try something.

The pipe from the Y back is 2 1/4 and then I have 3 1/2X24 chrome angle cut tips. The tips have a cool echo to them. I added a K&N air filter. With the filter and my exhaust I noticed and increase in power and gas milage. The sound is my favorite part, it turns haeads everywhare and it made all my friends jeolus.

I have an 87' that I have cut both cats off and am running a single to dual Flowmaster - with 2/5" pipes. It sounds pretty good but does crack and pop a little too much. I've been running this system for about 5 years and am ready to redo the exhaust (I cut the cats off after I left CA). I plan to add a single Catco cat and a Big Block Flowmaster (from Summit) - any comments? Will adding one cat reduce the popping?

I recently redid my entire intake and exhaust. It sounds awesome! I would not trade it for anything else. All the details are posted at [link:ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID9/566.html|Clifford Parts Installed]

The only thing else i added were two 3.5 inch crome boom tubes

I will have to post pictures and sounds as soon as i get a chance.

The whole project including the used holley 390 cfm carb, + additional parts (all new hoses, air filter, etc)cost about $1300 CAN. That includes lifters and push rods, as I did them at the same time.

Chris

Just a note to add to all your other options. I started running a 3" straight pipe from the rear of the collector on stock exhaust pipes on my 88-150. No cat (yes I know) It is a toy for sand dunes! Then I split it in front of the rear tank and have dual exaust out the rear. No muffler, no popping, smooth idle, great sound and extra power. I had a fellow stop me at the top of the biggest dune last week and wanted to know why I wasn't having trouble getting up it like all the other full size trucks. He fell over when he found that I was running a six. I LOVE IT!!!!! The six is great if you get that sweet spot woring.
That spot is different for almost every motor, but they all have one. Good luck finding the right combination. Oh, I do have one problem. I seem to keep breaking exhaust hangers when ever I start getting too much air when I fly out off the dunes.
