I own a 83' full size Bronco with the 302 engine. I recently installed a flowmaster dual chamber single exhuast. I want a louder sound and i was thinking of cutting the muffler and pipe off and just running the exhuast out of the catalytic converter. Does anyone have any idea how good this will sound? I would rather know what it will sound like before i cut off. I dont want to remove the muffer and then have to weld it back up because of an awful exhuast sound (keep in mind im wanting a lot louder sound without any clat clat clat sound). If I could get some feedback on this it would be appreciated.
Don't just cut the thing off and leave it under the floorboards. You'd almost be certain to get exhaust coming into the inside and that is definately BAD. Also, don't have the exhaust exit out the back under the bumper either. If you roll the back window down it will suck the exhaust right in.
I think my Y-pipe brings my exhaust back into the cab. Whenever I have the windows rolled down I can smell it quite well. It could either be because my cat is hollowed out, or my Y-pipe is split behind the rear tires at a 45 degree angle towards the bumper
You'd get louder sound by removing the cat (illegal, although if there's no inspection you won't really get in any trouble) and running the flowmaster. Best bet would be to get some headers, too. They will add more sound to the exhaust because they're less constrictive than the stock manifolds. The flowmaster does a pretty good job of resonating the sound, especially the 40 series that you have. I have one on my 85, it's nice, although I just have dumps on the muffler aimed at the ground, which adds some nice resonance, but you don't want to do that with a Bronco because the exhaust can get in the truck. My older brother removed the muffler from his 86 K-5 305 and ran just pipe. It sounds more like a motorcyle and is quieter than my truck with the flowmaster. The cat really deadens most of the noise, so if you can get away with either hollowing it out or removing it you'll get more sound. Of course, if you have to get it inspected each year then scratch that.
Has anyone run the exhaust out the side somewhere? I was thinking that would be a good way to keep the exhaust system short (light) and not have to worry about space constraints with the rear axle. I haven't had enough time under the truck to know if it would work...just something I thought up the other day.
The wheelbase on the Bronco is so short to begin with, I'd be worried about exiting the exhaust in front of the rear wheels at all. Its not even legal in some states. The concern being that rolling the windows down in traffic would allow exhaust to enter the cabin. Heck if the wind is blowing right, I get that ocassionally anyway when my pass. window is down. Mine exits in the stock location behind the pass. rear wheel.
I had the muffler removed on my '93, and ran straight 2-1/2 inch pipe from the cat out the stock location. It sounds ok, but is more noise than a 'good' sound. I did the same on my '91 f-150 before that, but had them split it into duals and run out behind the rear tires, and that sounded REALLY good. Almost like good old fashioned duals with no cat.. Don't know if the difference was the longer wheel base, or splitting into duals, but the bronco with the single straight doesn't sound near as good.
460 L&L headers over the frame 3in pipe SS40 series Flow Masters out the side in front of the rear tire. Oh Yeah High Flow 3" ID Cats on a 78 Bronco. Plenty Loud and Enviromental freidly!! Come on Guys if you want a loud exhaust use some Purple Horrnies or some thing like that but keep the cats working on the trucks if they don't flow enough get some after market ones that will. I don't even have to have them but put them on just because. All you do is give all those tree huging freaks more ammo to shoot at use to close land. Oh yeah by the way I didn't loose any power with adding the Cats. I also get no fumes in the cab with windows down or top off guess because i'm blowing clean fumes anyway.
If you want more sound your running the wrong flowmaster. Go get a original 40 series not delta flow or any of the other crap. Get a 3inch to 3inch and run a 3inch pipe out( out the side not the back )dont want exhaust fumes in your truck. You will notice a diff and it sounds great.
this is a little off subject but i wanna get a bronco for my next vehicle... 93-96 at least. and i wanna know what needs to be known about them... tips and all that. Now on the subject, get rid of cats... you dont need them
You need the cats if you have visual as well as emission testing in your area.
If you don't have visual inspections, you can pass emission testing without them. I bought my truck, had it emission tested, and it passed with flying colors. Only later did I actually look close enough under there to realize the previous owner had removed the cats.
How can you pass with out the cats. I have a acura that I run without the cat when I take it to emission it fails until I put the cat back on .I just got my Bronco and I want to remove my cats for the sound and performance how can you stop it from failing
Thanks
