best mod to your 300
hey,
I was just wondering what everyone thinks was their best modificastion to their 300 or 4.9. also, does anyone have some easy-to-understand plans for building a homeade FIPK for a '95 4.9? so far the only thing new on my engine is plugs, they helped a little but not enough. oh and cutting the exhaust off under the cab right in front of the HUGE stock muffler helped alot on my top end!

1.EGR Restrictor plate helped a lot.
2.Cleaning the throttle body helped TREMENDOUSLY.
3.High flow cat and a flowmaster delta flow muffler was a big plus too.
4.MSD Ignition Sytem With A MSD coil and a beefy sdet of wires brought my mileage up 1.4 MPG, Smoother idle and CRISP throttle response too.
5.Keep your tires at the proper pressures, Do a COMPLETE tune up if you do not know when it was last done.(Cap,Rotor, Wires, Air AND fuel filters, A PCV Valve is a must when tuning up!!

How did you go about cleaning your throttle body? i mean bvesides wiping the outside off....did you just use a dry rag or some kind of chemical/solvent/lubrication agent? also, on the headers i have been searching all my parts magazines to no avail, any tips? do you know any thing about a new cam maybe? thanks again

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 02:57 PM (EST)]I had to Remove the throttle body to clean it, I used Spray Carb cleaner (Gumout I think $2-$3) then reinstalled it with a new gasket($2-$3)
I had it and the upper intake off while replacing a valve cover gasket..
I cleaned the throttle body and the upper intake while they where off..
Quite a bit of stuff was built up on the throttle body and inside intake too...I believe some of this was comeing from a defective EGR valve (in my case) ....
Also clean the IDLE AIR CONTROL solenoid and the related air passages in the intake...

the project MPG was pretty cool! i read that it had a K&N FIPK on it, but like, i wanna make my own....200 dollars and up is a wee bit too much for an air system for my wallet. if i missed something on that site please tell me! i thought i read it voer pretty good....anyways, any good plans for homeade FIPK? thanks

This is the first mod that should be done. I was told by one shop that, on the 300s, about 90% of the improvement of a cat-back system can be realized simply by putting a free flowing muffler in place of the stock muffler in the stock piping. I drilled holes in the muffler backing plate on mine for better volume, but the gasses still have to go through the first perforated tube before the holes will help. I would likely be better off with a Flowmaster. BTW, I measured the perforated tube inside the muffler and it is smaller diameter than the pipe coming into the muffler, I think by a quarter inch. Since there are three perforated tubes, this muffler has got to be pretty restrictive.

I use cubic inches to describe carbureted engines (as mfrs did) and liters to describe EFIs.
trueblue_79
If you read the end results, you'll see that they found a DROP in power & economy with the FIPK (as you'd expect because of engine compartment heat) and the BEST overall performance with the drop-in replacement K&N and a free-flowing exhaust.

To trueblue_79, who was asking about cleaning the throttle body, first, I have never owned an EFI 300, so maybe my advice doesn't apply, but on my other EFI vehicles, I use throttle body cleaner. It is in an aerosol can, just like carb cleaner, but I think it is less harsh on plastic parts and IAC solenoids and such.... Anyway, you should be able to get it at most auto parts stores for about $3, and you just soak the inside of the throttle body, wipe out excess with a rag, and repeat until it is clean. About the IAC solenoid, I don't know how it is setup on an EFI 300, but on my Dodge Avenger, the recommended service procedure is to remove it completely and clean it using ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL. Supposedly some types of cleaners can gum it up, but since alchol is a solvent that evaporates quickly, it is the way to go..... I don't know how much good my info is, but I hope it helps.
