I just picked up a '66 F250 parts truck w/ 352 V8 & 4-spd (w/ high hump on floor, bolted in place) and was considering swapping this tranny into my F100 (which originally had 3-on-tree / previous owner converted to 3-on-floor); F100 has lower floor. => 1) what's needed to make the swap? (cut up the floor? different bell housing? different drive shaft? => 2) is it likely that I'm only gaining a granny gear -- with 2,3,4 basically = 1,2,3 gear ratios?
I had a 240 six with three on the tree on my 65 F-100 two wheel drive and I replaced the set up with a 352 and 4 speed out of a 66 F-100 two wheel drive. It was an easy swap. I had to cut the floor and use the raised tunnel out of the 66, which I used sheet metal screws to secure it to the floor using the factory holes in the raised tunnel. I am almost positive that I used the same driveline out of my 65.
The 4 speed does have a very low granny gear that I never used, I always started up in 2nd gear, but the 4 speed is a heavy-duty tranny, a lot tougher than the speed used behind the six.
Jeff -- thanks for the info; glad to hear there aren't any major issues.
John -- Some of the motivation is cosmetic -- I prefer the factory (4-spd) floor shifter look to the hacked-up 3-spd on the floor that I presently have from previous owner conversion from 3-on-tree.
But as final ratio is same (1:1), and granny gear is for hauling out stumps (practically speaking), I may stay with what I have for awhile...until I run out of higher priority things to fix (which won't be happening anytime soon).
=> Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the 3-spd that came factory behind the 352 is beefier than than the one that came behind a 240/300 6? I don't know what my trans code is as the data plate on the door is missing. But if the 4-spd is stronger...that might increase my motivation.
