I've just brought home a ratty little'77 shortbed,300/3spd in floor.I've got an old '67 3/4 w/360,4spd(motor junk). How hard of a swap to put the "granny gear" behind the 300?
The truck isn't worth the trouble,I was hoping I could swap out the trannies and leave the bell attached to the engine. So the 3 spd and the 4 spd's have a different pattern for the bell at the front?
Crawl under there and size the two up. Take your standard measurements, like from front of trans to tail shaft end and compare the two. What is the trans code off of the door of the 77? I would say you should be about 99% good for a direct swap, there weren't too many trannys used in that time span that didn't just bolt right up from one to the other.
IIRC, the 3 speed bellhousing has a narrower pattern where it bolts to the trans than the 4 speed does. But, just yank them both out and look, see if they're the same.
If they aren't, just get a 300/302/351 bellhousing from in front of a 4 speed, bolt it up and go.
