Im going to spend tomorrow getting some things done on the truck. I plan on spending the whole day in the shop messing around. Im going to replace the steering wheel bearings, weld up all the joints on my exhaust and some other minor stuff. Going to be a fun day. Another thing id like to tackle if I can get some input is this front end vibration my truck a developed. Well I think its the front end. It happens over 65 mph. Its not too bad but its there and bothers me. Any easy ways to tell where its coming from? I had the whole front end replaced 3 years ago. How long do you get out of front parts? ball joints bearings, ujoints etc?
Yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. It makes a noise like a loud humming. If I rotate them to the back I should be able to to see if it the tires right?
Well I took the truck in today to have the tires balanced but it didnt help. I jacked the front end up and when I grabbed the wheels top and bottom there was play in both sides. This is a ball joint symptom right?
could be bj's or wheel bearings, just peak your head around the back of the tire while you wiggle, but if its bj's then you'll repack your bearings anyway
well today I had a friend move the wheels while I checked the ball joints. They dont seem to be moving at all. Whats weird is both sides, passenger and drives have the exact amount of play in them. Are wheel bearing notorious for wearing out evenly?
Today I got around to tearing apart my front end. I didnt have to go very far before I found a problem. Turns out the nut inside the hub that holds it on had come loose, on both sides. Being sunday there wasnt anywhere for me to pick up a socket for it. I got it as tight as I could using a small screw driver and tapping it. Where can I find the socket for that bad boy?
most auto parts stores can get one if they don't have it. Most (napa, advance, autozone) will probably have on in stock. Make sure you torque it to the book specs. (haynes manual has the specs in it). Or ask someone on here. I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head.
My manual says I need a d85t-1197-a. I have one of these but it doesnt fit what I have on the axle. Inside the hub after I take the locking mechanism out these is one large nut that holds the hub in place. It almost looks like a big regular nut. The threads have grooves in them and it clicks as you turn it. Am starting to think those arent supposed to be there or im missing parts. Can someone please clarify.
