here is the company I believe that started it,
about 15 years ago they repaird a wire over a lake that had been shot, the bill to APS back then was $1,000.00 per minute from the time the helicopter took off until they landed. sounds expensive but that line carries a million dollars of electricity per hour.
They have some more footage of that type of maintenance on an episode of Modern
Marvels that deals with power transmission. I wonder what that guys vital signs look
like when he is setting up and starting out on the cables.
My vital signs would be obvious ___________________________________
pure, flat, line
Sitting on the bird would be one thing, but crawling along the lines? That'd wear me little fat body right out in no time..if I survived the first 5 seconds alone up there.
I watched a PBS special on this, they wear that special suit to help alleviate the discomfort of the voltage. While they don't get eletrocuted per say (that would take a ground connection), I guess the sensation once hooked up is like a thousand little ants stinging/crawling all over the skin.
I am terribly afraid of heights, so it sould not work for me.
I'm afraid of heights too. So there is no way i could do it. I also have a heart problem. It beats irregular a lot of the time. Maybe the voltage would straighten that out. Or maybe it would do me in. What happens if the chopper touches the wire?

Actually, it looks like they ground the chopper to the wire. I think he uses that wand to dissipate electricity (static?) as the chopper approaches to pick him up, then he hooks up a ground clamp. There simply isn't enough money to hire me to do that!

That is what he is doing, otherwise the arc would jump between the human and the Helo. Better between the wand and the Helo.
There is a Physics principal or two involved here, one is that the rotation of the Helo's rotor / engine / shaft causes a certain static electricity build up, plus there is the Physics rule that the Helo / people have to be charged to the line voltage.
Interesting - Reminds me of the old Tesla coils that I played with.
