just have a few questions. what are the common issues (if any)? is the 5.4 a must? this would be more of a daily driver rather than a work truck. is there anything to look for or stay away from? and a side note is it even worth doing exhaust and intake on these trucks or is it more for looks/sound? thanks
If you find a 2004, test the hell out of it! Make sure there are zero squeaks or vibrations. Vibrations from crappy tires and bad drivetrain components plagued more than their fair share of 04 trucks (a small number compared to the total sales for the year... but you have to figure 'bad eggs' end up on the used market sooner). Just test it at all speeds, including highway. Past that, they are great trucks. I dont think the 5.4 is a MUST.... but for my money the mileage and power differences are not great enough to justify not upgrading.
I just bought a higher miled '04 super crew- 4x4, auto, 3.73. I plan on driving it a long time, so I avoided the 5.4 because of the plug issues. Power is fine- the only thing I can find bad about the 4.6 is the tow rating...I will probably do very little towing in the #8-10,000 range. If I did a lot of towing in that range, I would have got the 5.4.
I have over 100,000 miles on the truck, I need front wheel bearings, I need a tune up and still average 17 to 19 MPG on a per tank basis. I hope that basic maintenance will gain 2mpg.
ps. The truck is completely stock and I love it just the way it is. I'm not a fan of loud vehicles.
i am not totally sure i will be getting one but i want to find out all i can first. i will only be getting on if they total my car or the frame is bent (in which i will fix and sell). i thought the plug issues got fixed on the new 3v motors?
search 'spark plugs' on this board and you will learn a lot. The plug problem with the 3v engines has to do with breaking plugs. This is not the same problem of spitting/stripping plugs....
