302 Ho?

Is there such a thing as this engine? Good friend of mine said there wasnt such a thing. If there is a 302 HO, whats the difference from the 302? Other than the fact that its high output. Different cams? etc etc...

Yeah!!! It's what powered the 5.0 Mustangs from '87-96, and was also found in various other cars like the later Cougar/Tbird, some Lincolns , and police LTDs.
It got a bigger cam, forged pistons(on earlier versions), a higher flowing intake, and SEFI mass air starting in 1989.

The high output HO engine was introduced in the Mustang. It uses a hydraulic roller cam and the 351W firing order (13726548). The base 302 uses a flat tappet hydraulic cam and the 15426378 firing order. The lifter bores are longer and pushrods shorter in the roller motors due to the length of the roller lifter. To use a roller cam in the base engine you need a small base circle cam and special lifters. Later in production all blocks came with provisions for roller cams even if equipped for flat tappet cams. You must run a steel gear on your distributor if using a roller and a cast gear if using a flat tappet. Mixing them will cause the teeth to be eaten off the cast part in a short time. Some of the HO engines came with forged pistons (if you are thinking of using a power adder).

Introduced in 85 complete with a real 4-bbl carb on manual trany cars. 86 first introduction of fuel injection.

92 was last year for forged pistons.

The roller lifters allowed for more aggresive cam profiles to make power & torque while meeting emissions requirements.

Ford Racing says the HO was introduced in 1982. In 1985 the motor got the roller cam and still had a carburetor which makes that distributor much sought after (vacuum advance and steel gear). Dizzy shaft in roller motors has larger diameter and gear will not interchange. 1995 was last year for the 5.0 engine in the 'Stang but a version oif it came in Explorers until maybe 2000. 1992 was the last year for the factory forged pistons and I don't remember the start year off the top of my head but it was in the last half of the 80's.

Yeah, it's hard to keep all those changes straight and until the roller cam in '85, it wasn't much different than the base engine.

I consider all the mustang, etc HO's to be 5.0 engines and not 302's. That may be what your friend is actually saying. The real and only HO 302 was the Boss 302 engine.

Wow, obviously there is a HO 302.. My next question os this, i plan on keeping my 1994 F150, would it be wise and worth it to drop a 302 HO or 351W in it? Im a ways away from doing that since as f now its my daily driver.

Get the 351W. It's a better truck motor.

Your 94 truck 5.0 isn't all that much different than the Mustang HO motor. Same block , heads, crank, rods, pistons (94 model year) Cam is slightly less agressive than the Stang cam, only a few thousandths less lift on the intake , 10 degrees less duration on the intake side (you've got what's called the F4TE hyd roller there) You can bump the lift to equal the Stang with 1.7 rockers. HO cam is 266/266 duration (advertised) .445/.445 lift. Your F4TE is 256/266 duration and .420/.445 lift. A roller 351 would be an improvement with it's 1/2" longer stroke, that's useful in a truck.
