The 292 will bolt into a 56 with stock parts. You'll need the bellhousing from the donor truck. You'll need the front motor mount from a 56. The transmission ought to bolt up if it's the narrow pattern transmission. Posting numbers from the transmissions will help answer questions. Does your truck have a 6 cyl?

my 56 f100 was a 6 cyl truck. but when i bought it someone had installed a 272 y block in it. I was going to just rebuild it and reinstall the 272 in it but the local machine shop that is going to do to the machine work said that 292 are better to use than the 272. the 292 is out of a 61 ford f150. the bell house that is on the 272 has # taam7505a on it i cant see a number on the transmission but it a column shift 3 speed that is in my truck. my main question is is the 272 and the 292 have the same block were the bell house mounts

Yes, you can pull the 272 out and put the 292 in its place.

If that's the stock 272, it might have some pretty good heads on it, better than the 292 heads from 1961.

if your going to bore the engine you can go with the 292 or the 272.one is no better than the other.you should use a matching set of heads.ive often seen them mixed up but if your going to have them rebuild go with a set.all 272 parts fit a 292.the only difference is the bore.

The 312 head might be a significantly different head. 1956 rockers have a higher ratio than most other rockers, so there's a definite difference. Yes, it will run, but if you're rebuilding, you might want to try to get things evened out.

The 272 can be bored out to 292. The later 292 block is supposed to have thicker main webs, and they fixed the length of the main cap bolts to make them longer. It's a toss-up as to which to use.

Be sure to zero-deck your block to make your engine run well. Mummert sells full height pistons to help with this. Mummert also has better head gaskets that help with clamping force on the deck.

Have you found John Mummert's web site yet? Lots of information there.
