Question regarding engine identification..... I have a 54 f100 and I am trying to locate a 292 for it. I found a 56 ford school bus in a local salvage yard with engine intact minus exhaust manifolds (must have been ramhorns). What types of things can I look for to determine whether it is a 292? I crawled around looking for firewall tag of some sort, but didn't see one.
Get the VIN information from inside the glove box door (VIN may be on inner w/shield post left side) on that school bus...post it here....But...engine in bus may be different/rebuilt/swapped, etc....look for casting numbers on heads, block, intake manifold.
A school bus most likely had either a Medium or Heavy Duty Y block installed originally.
Thanks everyone for the replies, the links were very helpful. I will be making the trip this weekend to the salvage yard to see if i can get it figured out. Are 292's pretty hard to come across? I have had no luck locally finding one, and can't really justify paying an e-bay price plus shipping for an engine that I will have to rebuild. I guess I will just need patience and one will come my way.... really don't want to put the money into the 239 or go with a more modern motor..... I like that at least the 292 looks period correct.
