I want to run dual exhaust out the sides of my truck. The person who made the split manifolds stopped making those. So I am now looking for some ideas before the engine is completed this weekend. AX has me pumped up and motivated. I may have this one done by the time he needs to tow the new auto cross racer to Georgia.
Have you thought about trying to fab your own headers? A lot of people go that route nowadays.
I've considered it for my Caddy engine (not alot of call for headers for a Caddy) In my case big block chevy headers are close and can be massaged by cutting off the flange and fabbing your own.
For a straight six like yours you would have a couple of choices, either fab 2 flanges or fab individual flanges for each tube. You could take the overall measurement and see if its fairly close to a modern engine (Theres plenty of headers available for the 4.0L Jeep engine, and probably the later 300 I6 Fords, etc) Then maybe take the new headers, cut off the flange, add your own flanges and there you have it.
I don't recall the shape of the exhaust ports on your engine, are they square or round? I thought I had an article detailing how to "convince" the round tubing to mate to a square opening. I'll look for it. Of course you might be able to find a bunch of info with an internet search. I did alot of reading about spliting the exhaust manifolds while researching the slant six MOPAR engines. An internet search there should give you some interesting reading also as they were splitting the original cast exhaust manifold (I think...I've slept and partied a bit since then)
We used to do a 2 & 4 split instead of 3 & 3. Been a long time but I still remember the unique sound and split depending on firing order was the trick. Had like 20 percent over the 3&3. Don't know why but it it worked good in the late 50's and 60's.
I'm also looking for manifold/header options for a flathead six. Mine is a 254M in a 1951 F6. My old manifolds are fused together and the exhaust portion is NFG. Nothing so far will separate them. I was looking for two manifolds to combine into one header but I'll be happy just to find a manifold setup that will allow me to get this truck running. If anyone has a manifold for sale, intake or exhaust, I'm all ears. Preferably separate and with the casting number beginning with 8MTH. I've got a set coming from Fresno right now but they are fused together as well and the intake portion is damaged. Very likely inseparable just like mine. Perhaps if we all band together we can force Dennis Carpenter to produce some new repro manifolds for these classic engines!
