hi guys , hope someone can help ..... ? have 2x 93 7,3L turbo in my boat . what is the max rpm for these motors ? at moment getting over 3600 , but think its due to too small props . "starpowr" marinised these motors , and claim 260 HP . if true , how would they have done this ? they do have intercoolers , but would that give so much added HP ? thanks
viv
They may have turned up the injection pump(s) that will allow higher fuel usage. Due to the cold water cooling you can play those types of games. I think 3600+ would be a little too high, personally I would run 3400 max. Usually the IP governor is set to limit RPMs by shutting of the fuel so the engine does not over rev. Might try calling Mercury Marine for some RPM guidance if Starpowr did not advise you.......
The small exhaust and low fuel setting Ford used on the 7.3 turbo kept the power low.
I think the HP rating was also very conservative.
After all they were getting ready to release the Power Stroke engine which was more expensive. The 94 Power Stroke engines were only rated at 215 HP if I remember right, so they could not rate the IDI turbo at anything close to what the Power Stroke was rated.
I would get a bigger pitch prop so you can drop the RPM down to the low side of 2500 RPM, the fuel savings should be considerable.
MPG is almost 2 MPG better at 2300 than it is at 2800.

These probably weren’t crate engines either meaning they may have been balanced a little better to keep the vibration noise down – side benefit of a little more rpms???
