When I accelerate softly, coasting, or going up a hill my car beings to stutter.
I should define stutter. It feels like the car is lossing power for less than a second. The happens in relatively quick succesion. If I add more gas it will stutter once and then seems to be fine.
I would like to fix this myself (cheaper obviously).
Agreed. When I changed mine last, I made myself red in the face trying to blow air through it. Interesting how much more responsive engines are when they can get some fuel, isn't it?
I have the same thing happening. My check engine light does not come on so I'm stumped. So far I have replaced the plugs and the coil boots. Mine has 75000 miles so I don't mind throwing a few parts at it to try and fix. I have never had a fuel filter be the root source of a missing problem- although I would replace it because it's the right thing to do if it is getting old. I think the fuel filter failing would cause problems when you really gas it. Most of my problems have been under very light acceleration. I had a similar experience on my old aerostar. What ended up fixing a miss/stumble that did not turn on the check engine light was replacing the oxegen sensor. I'm thinking about doing that on my expedition although I think newer vehicles might have multiple sensors so this might be an expensive bunny trail.
