Hi
Hope someone can help me with a transmission problem. I have a 98 Windstar and when I take off in drive or first gear I get a shudder from the transmission. It feels like the tires are slipping. IF I put the van in drive, first gear or reverse and hold the brake them rev up the motor it feels like something in the transmission catches them it starts to want to go. There is no problem shifting after it gets moving, only from a stop. I have changed the transmission fluid and that did not help. Also if I take off in second gear there is no problem.
Some of the Windstars and taurus vehicle used an aluminum piston for the forward clutch piston. The aluminum piston would split and the fluid pressure loss would cause a neutral condition until enough line pressure overcame the leak. Then there would be a noticeable "bang" into gear. Usually this is more noticeable after the vehicle warms up, as the aluminum will expand and so will the crack in the piston. Also, you should always start with the basics. Fluid level and condition. If the fluid has a burnt smell, there is no way of fixing it without a teardown.(usually clutch friction material and heat damage) There are also some electrical concerns that will affect your transmission. The MLP(manual lever position sensor) is a prime candidate to check. If there are any trouble codes in your engine computer(which relate to transmission components) you may want to investigate them for possible links to your problem. Some codes may be set as a "result" of your problem also. Hope this helps.
