f250 shuddering on acceleration

help!! I have a stock 1993 F250 4x4 long chasis with the 5.7 v8 and no overdrive with about 111K miles. I am told it has the heavy duty transmission. I am getting a pronounced shudder upon acceleration at any speed and it is getting much worse. It feels as if there is a loose u- joint on the drive train. It does not feel like it is comming from a wheel, but likey off the transmission to the transaxle linkages. A visual inspection reveals not obvious wear issues under the truck, but I know u-joiunts don't ahve to appear warn to be bad.

I would like to have a good idea of what i am up against befiore I take it to a shop of what is going on. Thank you for your assistance. --Doug

It does sound like a universal joint. Apply the parking brake, shift trans to neutral and engine off and get under and rotate driveshaft both ways. Look for any play in the front and rear joints of the rear driveshaft.
If your transmission does not have overdrive then you have the C6. With transmission in Park and engine running check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick. Check the color and smell of the fluid on the stick.

For what it's worth I had a similar problem on my '91 F150 302. Had just had it tuned up, never thought about looking at any of the tune-up stuff. Was told by someone to look at my ERG for a disconnected line & found one of the plug wires off the plug. Made me feel like a censored / expletive deleted for not checking before. Put that plug wire back on, world of difference. Did check my U-joints as per a reply.

Ha. I have the same tranny and had the same problem. I took it to a shop cause of the cold. It cost near 150.00 (plus tax) for 2 U-joints. I had them do one cause it was "hanging by a thread" and I bought the other one. I just dont want to go into the 15* cold to play. I need to move back to Florida.......

That's great, i'll get in the shop next week. The reason I am driving it to work now is because my daily driver is getting new air suspension strut or pump and I am worried the costs could get expensive. not looking forwad to that bill tomorrow. thanks!
