Engine won't start, fuel in oil pan

I have a 302 that has run fairly well the last few years, then all of a sudden I can't start it this year. Been putting in a Duraspark EI over the last few weeks with no success. Dropped the oil pump rod into the pan, and noticed my oil pump is loose down there, so I pulled the oil pan drain plug to empty the pan thinking I'd fix the oil pump and try it all over again, when the oil came spewing out, loaded with gas.

Question is, does this mean all that fuel is just blowing by my rings and right into the pan? I certainly have been cranking the engine a lot the last few weeks trying to get it to start. Yesterday it sputtered every 5-10 seconds, but no real ignition.

fuel in the oil is not good. your fuel pressure regulator is probably bad or your injectors are stuck open. I would start with the fpr, replace the oil and filter. run for a day or two then replace the oil again. the gas more then likely washed the bearings which is very bad so the whole bottem end needs to relub itself. thats why it wont start

Okay, thanks. Yeah, mechanical fuel pump on a 1971 302, carburated. I can hit the trottle and get fuel pumping into the carb. I have a see-through in-line fuel filter near the carb and fuel is getting up to the carb...took the top off the other day and the bowl is filled and the float is working. Could it still be a bad fuel pump diaphragm? I guess it's good that you didn't mention a totally shot rotating assembly (rings, etc.).

I think I'll put a negative battery cable on too...just don't think I'm getting the spark I need and it's probably 30+ years old.

To test your rings do a dry and wet compression test, if your rings are bad you will have poor compression values.
