i wqs wondering if anyone has ever changed their stock oil based air filter into a paper element air filter... especially what type and size of air filter(paper) would fit onto a single barrell holley on a 223 I6.. Are there any better performance issues with one or the other...I was wondering about changing mine but i'm leaning toward keeping the oil based unless i get real good feadback on the change....THANKS
The oil based work fine but you have to keep em clean. Personally, I couldn't stand mine and it is sitting on a shelf in my garage, maybe ebay bound. Who knows, I may get tired of all this power the FE now makes and decide to go back to stock.
As far as the air cleaner, some guys have taken to cutting the top out and slipping in a paper element. As far as performance, the oil based air cleaner does a good job, but is a little messier than paper.
I agree with Redmanbob; stock is the way to go, I been running my oil bath daily for the past 3 years; and I know I should change the oil more often but I don't, I wouldn't mine finding a extra oil bath in the salvage yard and convert one over to paper to see if its an improvement verse oil? I believe if performance is a concern then change over to a after market chrome breather/ filter combo, changing the inside a restricted oil bath filter seems to me to not provide a major improvement.
And you could even trailer queen your oil bath and run a chrome breather set-up, then once you drive to a show, change over to oil bath to impress the viewer's at the show. LOL
I finaly changed mine after using it since 1975, I don't know if its the stock 60 for a 223 since I pieced this truck together, but it looks similar to others I've seen..I took the top part which the oil bath filter is attached to and pryed the lip that holds it together up all the way around till the element came out...than flatened the lip back down..a little time consuming but not bad..then I found a filter to fit the dia and height (fram CA136)..didn't notice any difference in the way it ran..
Thanks for the part # Hiball, I will use that in future reference for when I fine another oil bath to make into a paper filter system. I didn't think there be any major difference between the oil bath to filter cartridge due to the restriction of the drum. I think you will only get true performance / better mileage from only installing a round filter that's expose to 360 degree air flow.
Jim; I still have the orginial oil bath set up. I was hoping in the future to find another oil bath filter and convert to paper. I was hoping to have it competely enclose like the oil, but with no oil mess & filter system
Thanks for the part # again..
