Why do people refer to this carb as a piece of junk for?? Of all of the holleys that I have read about people having problems with, the 1850 seems like the biggest target of the hate and dislike. Of course, if it is anything like my 80453 then I can see why.(tempermental little SOB. might as well take out the A/F screws and fill with JB weld) I did like the 4669 that took its place though....
Its simply not one of their better carbs. To be honest, if I were getting a new standard Holley, I would get a Demon. Its just a better built Holley. But then, with the new Holley Truck Avenger out, thats the only carb for a truck in my book:
I think the big reason is that the 1850 is treated like a universal carb for all occasions and there just isn't any such thing. Consequently, it gets slapped on some stuff that really should have a different carb or people don't take the time to properly tweak the carb in and jet it right. The Holley trick kit will wake an 1850 up quite a bit. I installed a trick kit in one and ran it on my hot rod and it ran really well but it just wasn't quite enough carb. I went to a 4777 which is a 650 double pumper.

Master,
The 1850 has plastic all over it.People who buy an 1850 have bought the cheapest/inexpensive carb holley sells. This means, probably, that no more will be invested in it. Without tuning to your direct application it will not perform to its potential. It will probably run lean due to the mismatched power valve or main/secondary jets. Then there's the holley backfire issue.
I've worked on many carbs over the years. The 1850 is the hardest to get apart after more than 18 months of service and getting it back together was even worse. Maybe it was bad luck, but, I never had that problem with the 41XX series carbs.
I believe the bowl floats are side hung on those also. They can spill under hard accels/decels. You get what you pay for.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher
P.S. My experience with the 1850 was in the late 80's. I don't know if holley has fixed there problems or not.
