Hey guys. I need some help with my wifes ranger. First a little about the truck. Its a 2000 ranger 4x4 3.0L. Over the past couple of months the truck has had a rattling noise coming from what seemed to be below the engine. Just recently after a 200 miles round trip the truck has gotten much worse. When you start it up it idles at 1200 rpms for about a minute but then drops down to normal. If you rev it up the idle drops only to 1200 or so after you let go of the gas. Also the oil pressure gauge doesnt move. I dont know if thats related because over the past week the gauge has been eractic and then it just stopped working. I figured the sending unit went south. I hooked the sacnner up to it and there werent any codes in it. Where should I start here? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated..
*On the rattling noise, look for a loose heat shield, especially around the converter. You may also want to make sure any steel lines are properly anchored to the frame via the OEM clamps/retainers.
*On the idle thing, no code(s) stored suggests problems with the IAC solenoid (from what I've read in here). Myself, I'd probably do pinpoint diagnostics on the solenoid and clean it. Cleaning it is a freebie .
*You are probably right about the bad sender for the phoney oil pressure gauge. Phoney gauge? That's because, by design they are supposed to read midrange when the engine developes about 7 PSI of oil pressure. They don't reflect the true pressure. If you take the wire from the gauge sender and ground it, the gauge should move to around midrange. If not, there is another problem.
Since none of your problems seem overly serious or difficult to address, just pick one and go for it.

It's on the upper intake. If you look in my gallery under misc, you will see what one on a 4.0 looks like in the upper right corner of the pic. Yours will look similar to that one; yours could be made from plastic.
Today while was looking around under the hood for any leaks I decided to unhook the IAC while it was running. The result, I much quieter and normal idle. Why is this? Also, whats the best method to finding a vacuum leak?
I seem to be having the same high idle problem. I just replaced my IAC and it runs high now until I come to a complete stop, at which point the rpm's will hang up for a bit until it drops to "normal".
