Will the fuel injected intake fit on a carb'ed motor. I think the carb'ed motor is 83-84'ish. Is it a simple unbolt one intake bolt on the other one? How about the fuel pump hole? Do they make a block off plate for the 2.3?
If you are just converting a carbed year to EFI, I would lean towards "Go for it", but if you are swapping that engine in place of a bad EFI engine, find a newer year with more power.
If your EFI engine is a dual plug head, forget it. If you have one of the couple of years that had a distributor style ignition then you may have to drill and tap a hole for an additional bolt but everything else should bolt right up. If you go digging through a junkyard you'll probably be able to find the fuel pump block-off off of a distributor EFI motor.
[QUOTE=Bart99GT]What year EFI motor do you currently have?
If you have one of the couple of years that had a distributor style ignition
It's an 87 EFI motor so it's got a dis.
then you may have to drill and tap a hole for an additional bolt but
Drill and tap into the head for a intake mounting bolt??
everything else should bolt right up. If you go digging through a junkyard you'll probably be able to find the fuel pump block-off off of a distributor EFI motor.
I see you have a stang. Will the stang 2.3 bolt right in? What exact years did the stang start EFI on the 2.3's and did they ever come with the 8 plug heads? If so, what years?
Yep, after 1985 Ford added an extra intake manifold bolt hole in the head.
2.3L EFI engines started in 1983 in the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Incidentally it was one of the first engines that Ford installed port fuel injection on. Mustangs used the dual plug head from 1989-1993 if memory serves me right. You can use the Mustang long block, but you will need to swap all of the accessories and manifolds from your existing motor to make up differences in packaging.
what year did the ranger motors come with a carb? Could this be a 84-85 ranger motor with the correct amount of bolt holes? Or did the change occur the same year (efi and extra bolt hole)?
I think 86 was the first year for the EFI Ranger and just happens to be the same year they made the change in the intake manifold. Older 2.3L EFI engines used an inline intake design similar to the dual plug intake design. When Ford switched to the square type intake the extra bolt was added I presume to improve sealing around the water jacket that passes between the #2 and #3 runners.
