I have a 1968 F250 truck with a 390 engine and manual steering that I want to convert to power steering. I have been told this is a fairly easy conversion by installing a pump and steering box that has the power assist built into it (as opposed to needing cylinders on the steering arms). I need to know which year model boxes will fit this truck. I have access to a 1978 box and pump that was on a F250 with 360 engine. Can anyone help me regarding which year models will fit, especially this 78 one that I can get easily? Thanks for the help. Gerald. email to taxback@hci.net
I'm in the middle of doing the same conversion on my '76 F250. I'm assuming you're talking about a 4x4? If so, John is right, try to grab all the parts you can. The hardest part of the conversion is making the mount for the new box, you have to sort of box the C-Channel. Forgot to mention, the '78 F250 box is a good fit, it's what I'm using. Read in the Tech articles section on this page, there's a good article on the conversion. Just this weekend I finished building the mounting box, I'm taking it to be professionally welded. Points to watch out for is that the box has to sit tight enough to the top of the frame so that the Pitman arm doesn't hit the frame. Also, the further back you mount the box, the less interference you'll have with the radiator support. Your '68 is a bit different I'm sure but this should be a good starting point.
Actually, my truck is a 2WD. It has duals on the rear and I use it as a farm truck and to haul stuff around my sawmill. I appreciate your help and all the other I have received. I will check out the tech articles immediately. Thanks. Gerald
Sorry, I jumped the gun regarding the conversion. I really can't help you other than knowing that all '76-'79 2wd power steering is the same, should be easy to find a box for cheap.
