The forgotten fluid, what is it???? BRAKE FLUID!!!! pawpaw's pet peve, I've just flushed & refilled the 94 Taurus, next is the Ranger. It's been 3 years on the Taurus & will be 3 on the Ranger this summer, so I want to get a jump on the towing season. Both will get MotorCraft brake fluid, it's some good stuff. If you've not done a brake fluid change in the last two or three years, then check the CURVE on the following link to see where you are on BOILING POINT. A good easy read on brake fluid Why Change Brake Fluid? (aa1car.com)

Reason: Update Link 8/13/24
That curve doesn't go long enough for me to even come close to registering on it. Been 9 yrs in the Ranger. Where would that put me on the "curve"? LOL
Learn something new every day. In my 17 years of driving I have never heard of changing brake fluid or power steering fluid unless you had a failure of some kind and ran empty.
Well I just finished getting around to flushing the Rangers brake fluid.
It's been a little over two years (4/24/03) since it's been flushed & it needed it. The fluid was a medium amber color. I know color isn't a good way to tell if it needs changing, but time tells me it does.
If you havn't changed your fluid in the last two years, check where you are on the boiling point curve, on the link I posted above.
For those of us that tow or haul, upgraded boilng point could make all the difference
in the world in a panic stop, or maintaining control, comming down that long mountain grade.
I used a one man brakebleeder & two 12 oz bottles of MotorCraft DOT-3 fluid, got her nice & clean inside.
I see they've stopped putting the MotorCraft fluid in a metal can.
I don't like that at all, as plastics permeability to water vapor, isn't nearly a good as metal, and seeing as how brake fluid loves humidity, seems to me the old metal can was a better idea, to keep the fluid nice & dry, until we buy & use it.
Anyway, check to see where you are on the curve. I know where I am NOW!!!! LOL
I did my power steering fluid at 25,000 when i did my first major service. I skipped it this last time i did the major service though. I've got 54k on my truck now, i planned on bleeding the fluid when i do rear pads which is probably around 65k
