getting a chatter or gripping on a start mostly if just only when I'm turning even if its a mild take off yes its a 3.55 posi in a bronco and only had it a month it didn't do it last month [ -1000 miles ago ]when I got it the rear brakes are good and no seepage in the the rear seals and wheel cylinders -- blown out back plates on the shoes lubed but the chatter from a turning start goes on for 10/ 30 feet at times the rear end was low down a pint and I added 90w with the posi- concentrate 4oz mixed in with a quart so still quite strong mix and it still does the same thing so what do you think ? any thoughts ? thanks and if you can suggest/help john
this is normal for a rear with posi. the tires will chatter/ squeal going around corners with your foot on the gas. i have a 79 with a detriot locker and it does the same thing.
thanks for the replies I have 2 95 broncos with identical options [ serial numbers are 16 numbers apart and built on the same day. one chatters and the other is smooth as can be but the rear cover has been off the one that chatters sounds like its time to pull the cover and inspect a wash out and complete gear oil with pos-addative is in order DO WARN DOWN/OUT CLUTCHES SHOW ANY PHYICAL SIGNS starting to grind my teeth john
You ought to see some sign by looking in the carrier if it is bad enough to bother you to this degree. It's not the tires, it is probably the clutch pack. Worn clutches will act just like a worn clutch up front and chatter when in that condition. See if the complete fluid change will help it rid itself of some possible entrained particulate matter. Hope this helps.
tex thanks for the reply I think your on to something with the complete change
with a messy gasket on the punpkin and being the second owner my feeling is they didn't use g-4/g-5 spec gear oil or the additive that gets you into posi -clutch type specs . so this weekend with a bucket of gl-5 and a gasket in hand the drain /flush is the way to go thanks for the advise and words of help
I had a '84 Bronco and I was having some problems with the rear. A friend of mine told me to find a big parking lot and do figure 8's. I did that and it worked.
get that rear case open and inspect the spider gears asap. if there chewed up ford has a rebuild kit for $80 i believe. this would be a good time to install a lunch box locker in the rear. the stock LS is garbage and will fail again. mine grenaded my gears inside . i swaped to a 9inch after that.
