how do you replace the clutches in a trac-loc posi rear?

yesterday i got stuck in my driveway when my posi or limited slip quit working. i was in snow and i tried to turn around and I couldn't go nowhere and the rear of the truck was shuddering and i had no posi. then after awhile it started working again. Is this because the clutches in the ford trac-loc diff are getting worn out? if so can you replace them and how expensive is it. any help would be appreciated.

The track lock is a limited slip differential, it's not a locker so it's won't provide full 2-wheel drive in zero traction situations. The factory clutch config is heavily biased towards slip though, so you can make a big improvement in performance by restacking the clutch packs and shimming it a little tighter.
To service it you have to remove the diff cover and pinion shaft, axle c-clips and pinion gears, and then the clutch packs can be removed and replaced with new disks where necessary(any showing excessive wear). The improvement comes from changing the stacking order to alternating friction plate and pressure plate, instead of the factory sequence, and shimming for more spring preload.

This webpage helped me out when I did mine.

Don't use the dealer for parts. I used a drivetrain shop, and they were half the price and I still got Ford OE parts.
