I posted this problem a couple weeks ago and got alot of help. Now I need some more. I've been trying to find the original color of my 46 ford truck. The firewall, and the door panals that come off on the doors, and under the seat where the gas tank goes. All of those areas are RED. Not a bright red. It's hard to explain. You can tell the red has been there for a long, long time. Anyway I have been told the color of red that come on these trucks was called (Vermillion Red) hope I spelled that right. My dad said these trucks come red b/c his grandfather had a red truck with a cream grille and the trim pieces on the hood was cream also. Front bumper was black and I think he said the wheels were black to. What I'm asking is, is the Vermillion Red the right name for the red on the truck. I hope someone can help me out with this. I'm trying to dig up all the history on this truck I can. Thanks!!
Vermillion is the right name for the red Ford used. My book shows only green for '46 trucks - crazy, huh?
'47 shows green, black, gray, blue and vermillion as truck colors. A few years later on, vermillion was given the color code number M-1722.
mtflat what book do you have. I would like to get it. So you are saying every 46 made was green. Man I don't know? This truck is getting to me on this color thing. All I know is all the places I mentioned on the truck is red. And it is a 46. Maybe someone over the years painted it. If the did they went all out b/c they painted inside the doors and where the gas tank is. Usually peaple who paint don't get that detailed with it. I don't think we are going with red anyway, we've had to many red trucks and cars in the past. Going to do something different this time. I would like to know what book I can get though on the paint colors, that would be interesting to look at. Thanks again mtflat for the info. Any more comments would be welcome.
I have not heard of only the Greenfield Green as the only colors for the '46, there was a red for '46, and yes, Vermillion Red. Green was the standard color, vast majority were green. And yes, you do have the paint scheme correct with the cream for bolt on trim, and the wheels are black.
The book I use is the Car & Parts Magazine's "Catalog of Ford Truck ID Numbers 1946-1972, Pickups and RAnchero"
It's not foolproof and I've found a few glitches, but usually it's close. The other variable is Ford Motor Company - they produced so many exceptions that there is hardly anything that can be called the 'rule'.
According to my book, 1946 lists only green - Village Green until Nov 30, 1945 code # M-3949. Then after Dec. 1, 1945 they painted them Greenfield Green, code # M-3990
One more ? adout vermillion red. I found a pic of a 48 truck that a guy had. It was or looked close to a maroonish color. Is it more maroon or red?? The color on the 46 is more of a red than it is maroon. But it does have alot of years on the paint.
From what I've seen of vermillion (my '48 was meadow green) I'd describe the color as being very similar to the red found in a box of crayola crayons. Just plain, primary red.
'46 sedan delivery used a maroon color, but not p'ups.
Thanhs mtflat. I looked at one and you are right. We are thinking about doing a 2-tone paint job. I like the 2-tone look nobody really does that anymore. You've been alot of help.
Chances are very slim it was factory. To check it out I would say to check in places where a respray would not get. Like under gas tank, behind kick panels, or behind the firewall insulation pad.
I am restoring my Grandfather's 46 Ford that he purchased new and I can guarantee it was red with cream trim but I can find no listing for these colors.
Welcome to the site, great to have another early truck owner here. Sounds like a great project, seeing as it was your grandfather's, it probably have a great history.
Vermillion Red with Tacoma was one of the standard combinations, I had a '47 in the same color combination several years ago. The paint is still readily available, PPG still lists it.
