I am new to the Forums. Just purchased a 46 Ford PU and having it shipped to me. Any suggestions on where I can locate information such as available options, paint schemes and colors, etc. This truck is all original and the color was a brighter red. Most sites I have looked at don't list anything like this as a Ford color for 46. I found one color chip on Duponts web site that looks close called Vermillion Red, but the other sites don't list this as a 46 or 47 color. I haven't been able to locate anything that gives a decent description of any two-tone variants either. This truck was my grandads and the first road vehicle I ever drove. It has been in a garage for 35+ years and I want to keep it all original.
Hi and welcome to the site. There is alot of info on here. Here is a site that has color chips for the 46 model year and Vermillion is a choice. I am linking you to the 3rd page. It is a copy of NASON Commercial Colors for FORD. AutoColorLibrary - Color Chip Selection
The other reds of this year are no where as bright as the Vermillion Red.

AFAIK, Ford offered five colors in '46, as follows:
Black
Greenfield Green
Light Moonstone Gray
Modern Blue
Vermillion
Standard (and only) trim color was "Tacoma Cream." No two-tones.
List of available options:
AM radio
Heavy-duty battery and generator
Heater-defroster
Seat covers
Passenger-side sun visor
RH tail light
RH W/S wiper
The above being file notes from when I owned a '46 1/2T V8 P/U (Modern Blue paint) in the days before Al Gore invented the internet.
"Vermilion red" M-1722 air dry no.M-2882 There was a "commercial red" That the same paint, MC-1722 and air dry no. MC-2822,
Mines "Vermilion fire" A ford austrailian colour from the 70s and tacoma cream
WOW. Thanks for all the replies and info. I will check them out as soon as I have more than 5 minutes. I hope to have the truck here in 3 to 4 weeks. I haven't gotten this excited about Christmas since I was maybe, 6 years old.
Have you heard of the Early Ford V8 Club of America yet? It is a club dedicated to the restoration and preservation of 32 to 53 Ford products. Web site: http://www.earlyfordv8.org/
38 Coupe, thanks for the info. I think I saw them come up on a search the other day but was busy looking for some other info then I couldn't remember the name and ran out of time. I did get a catalog from Mac's the other day and have one coming from Dennis Carpenter. If you know of any other good Ford suppliers let me know.
Thanks for the info. The reason I asked for about 2-tones was I had just read an article from this summer done on a 46 PU near Indianapolis. The owner had painted it red with black fenders and running board and stated in the article that this was an option available in 46. I didn't think that was correct but I am new and apparently this guy has several restored vehicles in his shop. Something didn't seem right. Heck, you got the spare tire holder that year but they didn't put a tire on it because of the rubber shortage still happening. I read where you had to get your own spare tire.
One other question for you guys. Sometime in the early to mid 50's my Grandfather changed the engine from the straight 6 to the flathead 8. The original motor is being sent to me in the bed of the truck. What are the advantages or disadvantages to reworking the 6 cyl. I never drove this rig with anything but the 8 in it. I am fixing this up for the nostalgic reasons and plan on keeping the 8 in it. He told me one time that he had gotten the motor from the school bus yard where he drove bus. It was probably a spare engine they had and when everyone was going to overhead valve motors they were giving the flatheads away. At least that what some people in the know have told me.

Good question. When you asked about two-tones, I was thinking more about body two-tones, not fenders and such. Probably because I had recently participated in a discussion about '60s two-tones. I think it might have been an option on '47s, and was somewhat common in the '30s, so it stands to reason it might have been possible for the '46 too.
Hopefully someone here will know for sure. My old notes are limited to what I did with my '46, and it's been gone for quite a while. And I've lost touch with the other '40s Ford guys I knew at the time.
In the many years I have been working on, collecting and researching the '42-'47 Ford trucks, I have never seen mention, nor factory photos of a 2 tone option. That's not to say people didn't have them painted 2 tone after the fact. Moparf and GM trucks did use a 2 tone option, but I think that's due to the fact that their designs were a little more dated than Fords (i.e. pod mounted headlights, not a full "fat fendered" '40's look like the cars and Ford trucks). The Mopars and GMs look great in the 2 tone, my '41 Plymouth will be finshed in 2 tone, but the Fords seem to look better solid.

I am ok with this truck staying the original red but i have to admit that red with black fenders was nice. Added a dimension the solids don't have. Guess that is why my wife has to pick all of my color combinations out be it clothes or anything else. I am just a guy missing the color coordination gene.
I have seen a 46 done in blue with black fenders and it looked good. I'm not a fan of red trucks (no offense to anybody) but with black fenders they do look very good. That's what my 41 Plymouth will be, red with black fenders, as it was originally. I say if you like the black fenders, go for it. Lots of solid red pickups out there, the black fenders will make it stand out in the sea of red trucks.
