I was taken my cousin for a ride in the woods and came across this small puddle. I have been through it before with no problems. So we went through it. i felt a jerk like i bottomed out. I got out and looked at the radiator and the engine and everything seemed alright. well after i got it home and washed i crawled underneath. The crossmember that holds the back of the transmission up is bent badly. The torsion bars also mount to this crossmember and the passenger side TB mount is messed up. The adjusting screw is pointed straight forward so the TB adjustor is resting on the crossmember.
So all said and done, i need a new crossmember. Anyone know if they make an aftermeket one that is a little beefier. If not where can i get a stock one and about how much will it cost. You think advaced auto can get one? Im kinda lost right now. All i know is i need to get it fixed soon. I dont want to risk driving it if i dont have to.
so that's about $50 US ? There are only a couple junkyards around here, and cause of turkey day they're closed. Hope they're open tomorrow. thanx for the reply.
Yeah you should be around $60 or so. That's just a guess. Check the bushings as well. If they are worn, replace them. Also check your transmission mount too.
I had to replace one on my daughter's 97 back in March/April. I purchased a new one from Ford and do not remeber it being all that expensive (<$100.00). FYI - Hers was bent when she hit somone from behind at the on ramp to a freeway. She was going less than 10 mph. Broke the motor mounts and the transmission mount. I was really suprised at all of the damage from such an incidental collision. Hence, ity does not surprise me that yours was damaged so easily. Good Luck.
Thanx, Did you do it yourself? I have already ordered the part from the dealership. One guy told me $101.50 and when i went back to order it the other guy sold it to me for $80.22. It should be here tomorrow or wednesday. Im not worried about changing the new piece, just bending back the part that is welded to the frame rails. I think a torch and a hammer should do it.
Was not a big problem. I used only a hammer and misc. other leverage aids (big screw driver, large crescent wrench, pry bar) to "re-align" bent parts (no torch) and had no problem. Torch would probably have been helpful but nothing was bent too badly, just the cross member. It was twisted forward nearly 90 degrees, hence the need to replace. I would recommend checking your motor mounts before you get too far with this. All three (third being the rear/transmission mount) were busted in my situation. I would not be surprised if at the very least you did some damage to the rear/transmission mount.
I didnt check the front engine mounts yet, but i will. The rear one looked ok from what i saw. But once i get it lifted up i will take a closer look. The holes between the crossmember and the tranny mount are elongated to allow for some movement, but one of the bolts is all te way forward while the other is all the way back due to the twisting.
