I am very new to diesel engines and really like my new 04 PSD supercab/5sp auto/3.73 rear. The engine seems to be a great piece and the tranny is taking some getting used to. The Lightning was great and ran low 12's, but towing was out of the question. I have a few questions....with only 400 miles on the PSD the tranny seems to have a humming sound from it time to time....is this normal? The dealership said it was fine, but often I think they arefull of it. Aside from the normal maintenance in the manual, what are some issues, maintenance tips you guys could help me out with for the upcoming future. Granted this truck is overkill for towing a 2800 lb mustang, but I wanted a truck that would last and reliability would not be an issue. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Might be time to check on a "backup" dealer if they've started with the BS already and don't take your statements seriously....
One suggestion - read - read - read here and don't be bashful about posting your questions....
once you break the 6.0L in, you'll find you only lost a few seconds of acceleration
MY nephew just got a 2000 lightning that has a WONDERFUL sound when the blower starts screaming !!!!! but didn't know they were in the 12's !!!!! is that stock ?
I was running 16# of boost compared to the stock 8#. Tranny had a valve body, had the superchips tuner software, intake, lowered, cal tracks bars..ect ect 421rwhp/529rwtq. I am going back to the dealer I bought the 04 PSD truck from...they are farther away, but they are smaller and have better cust. service. Replacing the stock speakers w/ Infinity Kappa's from the old L today. I am also going to try and hook up a boost guage as well
I think Ford sells a Ranger thunder package in Canada. I would like to see them sell an SVT powerstroke . I also recently traded my second Lightning (02 &03)on an 05 F250 PSD 4x4 as I decided I wanted something nice to drive year round and a recent move meant I was putting $20 per day in the gas tank. It should be here any day as it was built on Oct 18.
Ford did cancel the Lightning with the end of the so called Heritage edition F150 .Svt magazine said several months ago they were retooling for the new body style Lightning for 2006. I thought my Lightning was the perfect SUV until I bought an old Porsche 911 and had a great choice of vehicles in the summer but put both away for the winter, to drive a beater. I hope my new 05 PSD 4x4 SC lariat turns out to be nearly as good a vehicle as the Lightnings are/were.

I have a couple of suggestions for ya that you might want to consider...
1) Don't wait until 5000 to change your break-in oil. I personally changed it on both my diesels at 1500. The problem with stock oil filters is they only filter particulates between 15-50 microns. But the majority or what you find in break-in oil is 5-10 microns in size. So all that is happening is all that metal is being slid up and down your cylinder walls because your filter can't filter it. It is a really good idea to start sending oil samples to blackstone also. The kit is free. All you have to do is pay for the test. Which is like $20 or $25, can't remember.
2) I would HIGHLY recommend you switch to a full synthetic. I would advise that make sure it is CI-4 certified. I personally run Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 because it works great in hot and cold weather. Which is important in here in the midwest.
3) Definately consider fuel additives such as Power Service or Stanadyne.
4) Unplug the EGR and remove your restictor plate, this is explained in the EGR Disconnection thread at the top of this forum.
