Has anyone changed there transmission fluid on the escape? I called Ford up to see if theres a filter for it and they told me its on a screen in there and I would have to rip the transmission apart to change it. Ford said it will only cost $70.00 to do a complete flush.(just a flush no screen change). Would it be cheeper to do it myself or take into ford?

If you drain it you'll only get about 1/3 of the fluid changed. $70 for Ford to do a power flush would be cheap since I've heard quotes of twice that at dealerships. I think I paid $90 at 60k miles a few months back (non-dealership). You would have to disassemble the tranny to change the filter.
I got a little under 47000 miles on it. Do you think I should take it in and have it changed now or should I wait. and did you feel a differeace in the shifting?
Don't wait.. the CD4E trannie in the Escape is it's weak link.. You should flush it every 30k.. also you did not say what year your Escape is.. their is a reflash of the computer that Ford does to correct your shift points and avoid engine stalling on quick decel.. also the torque converter can shudder if you don't flush the fluid.. ongoing shudder will burn up the converter clutches and then you need a new converter..$$$
Its a 2002 and I already took it into ford for the recall they they said they redid the computer. It stalled once coming off the freeway. I was going about 40 mph and I call Ford up and they told me if the check engine light isn't on don't worry about it. This was before the recall went out. Thanks for the info I just got a card from the dealership were I bought it and they gave me a coupon for 10% off service.

I had my first flush at 60k and can't tell any difference but I didn't have any problems prior. You'll find many people quoting 30k but the owner's manual doesn't state that. I'll agree that the CD4E has had it's share of problems but I've seen people have failures whether they flush every 15k miles or every 60k miles.
So what your telling me is that the trasmission the the escape isn't really good and i shouldn't be surprize if anything happens to it. Im glad it got the extend warrenty on it.
Just keep an eye on the fluid.. be sure it has not been overheated.. It will smell burnt if it has been, heat is the killer of trannies. The CD4E uses the old regular Mercon fluid no matter what it says on your dip stick.. some early models had Mercon-V on the stick in error.. the wrong fluid can cause torque converter clutch slippage and eventual failure. You can feel it shudder if it is slipping, (another warning that it may be time to change fluid). It surprises me that people will change their oil religiiously but will let the trannie fluid get burnt and brown and wonder why it quit...

I'm not saying it's not any good, just be careful. Use plain Mercon and yes, some have failed. This isn't a new tranny. The problems surfaced in the 90's in the Mazda 626 which uses the CD4E. I've got close to 70k miles without any problems and never considered an extended warranty.
Many vehicles have a weak point - I have a Honda which has a water pump weak point, Bugs have a oil consumption rate weak point, BMW has a series with a tranny failure weak point, etc. Personally, I wouldn't tow 3k+ lbs constantly with an Escape nor would I leave it in overdrive if I didn't ALL city driving where my speed was constantly varying between 40mph and 50mph.
Im going in Monday to have it changed. Ford says they use synthetic motorcraft oil in the trans.
We are trying to help you here. Go out on the sales lot and open the hood of a new Escape and look at the dipstick.. Yellow passenger side in the rear of the engine compartment.. It will say .. "Mercon" Then look in the owners manual of a new Escape ..It will say the same thing.. Most new ford cars and trucks take the synthetic but not the CD4E in the Escape. Your Tech should know, be sure to ask before someone puts in the wrong fluid and the converter goes nuts...
Well if they put the wrong fluid in and the tranny fails wouldn't they be responsible? They should know what there doing. Why would synthetic oil be bad? It out proforms other oils. I was tought synthetic oil is the best. I run AmsOil 5W-20 in my F-150 and the escape ( it cost about $45 each oil change) and I haven't had any problem with it.
