Light squealing noise above 40mph on 2000 4x4

First I drive a 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x4 Extended Cab with 25k miles on it. When I drive on the highway I start to hear a noise coming from under the truck but I have no idea what it is. It only happens lightly at 40mph and then gets louder the faster I go. It gets very annoying after awhile and makes my worry that I might damage something if left uncheck. Here is the best way I can describe the noise; It’s not high pitched but somewhat in the middle. If you were to get a foot long metal pole and insert it in a metal ring and then turn the pole at a high rate of speed you would get a light metal rubbing noise that sounds kind of smooth and not grinding. This is the noise I hear under the truck above 40mph.

Has anyone experienced the same thing? I’m hoping it’s an easy fix and something I can do myself and not have to take to the dealership. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Does the noise change with vehicle speed, engine speed, by putting it in nuetral/pressing in the clutch, when you apply the brakes, turning?

Only happens at speeds above 40mph and increases as I go faster. No brakes, steering, or clutch involved. Sounds like it may be coming from the driveshaft (not the thump/clunk problem) possibly but I want to be sure before I take anything apart.

I wonder if the t case is still engaged, i know that my truck can make a humming noise with the tcase engaged, and that would explain why it is louder at higher speeds. That is just one thought, another is maybe your tires? are they lookin ok? any unsusual wear on them?

Yeah the tires look great. I think I may have found a Ford TSB that desribes my problem but Im not sure. Here is the TSB:

This TSB applies to 2001 Explorer Sport/Sport Trac 4X4 vehicles, 1998 - 2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 4X4 vehicles (all build dates), and 2000 - 2001 Ranger 4X4 vehicles built after 11/1/1999 only.

ISSUE

Some 4X4 vehicles may exhibit a high-pitched "squeal" or "whistle" type noise from the front of the vehicle at speeds from 16 to 64 km/h (10 to 40 mph). This noise may be caused by the front halfshaft excluder (dust) seals (-3K070-) as they rotate against the inner front hubs. The noise may be more pronounced in cold weather conditions.

ACTION

Install new front halfshaft excluder seals on each side of the vehicle.

that pretty much sounds like your problem. with the exception of for you it happens at speeds over 40, and in the tsb, it says 10-40, but your truck may be a little different, i'd deffinantly get them checked out!.

Is this an urgent replacement or can I deal with it later if I put up with the noise.

I have what sounds like the same issue, except the squeal doesnt change pitch or volume as I increase speed. Always the same sound, until I nearly stop, then it drops off (ie less than 16kmh).

How do you go about changing this?

Can you lubricate it without a major job?

I just dont think anybody really knows. From what I can understand from reading a Ford Shop Manual and TSB information, I don't think its a harmful problem but needs to be fixed at some point (as its just a seal making noise). Im just going to bring my truck in to the dealership during a time I think I can part with it for awhile. It seems for every hour of work Ford does on my truck an extra week is added before I get it back (2 hour job = 2 weeks they have it). I really hate all dealerships around my area. Customer service is not a top concern around here in Northern California. I would do it myself if I had all the proper tools to work around the locking hubs.

If it is the front dust shields, try to spray a "LITTLE" bit of penetrating oil on the seals. They are located in the center of the hub on the back side of the spindle. You can see them where the cv joint shaft enters the spindle. If the noise goes away, just spray them every so often. The squeal is annoying, it won't hurt anything. Good luck.
