Tranny Noise

I've got a 99 F250 SD V10, 4wd, short bed, extended cab with about 118,000 miles on it.

Its been making some noise and that noise is getting worse. I only hear the noise when driving in town under 40 mph. The truck does not shake or vibrate. At times the noise happens when I am stopped at a red light with brake applied, if I shift into neutral that it stops, if I put it back into drive then it will start again.

The noise has been going on since i bought it, over 2 yrs ago, however its getting more frequent. I thought something from the truck being lifted, like an exhaust rattle. I can find nothing under the truck that seems to rattle.

The rattle is kind of like a baby rattle, or some tin pieces rattling in a can. (hard to describe)

Do you think its the tranny or torque converter?

How hard is it to drop the tranny? I've never done it before....but would be doing it for this truck.

I pull a gooseneck implement trailer hauling antique tractors, hay infrequently.

Let me know your thoughts...

Thanks!

something in your statement leads me to beleive it is exhaust related like a catylic converter, stuff ratling around in it as it is going out.

Additional Info on my truck:

Transmission Code "E" = E40D
Axle Code "31" = 3.73 Non-Limited Slip

Those are the codes I pulled from the door jamb, if the interpretation of them is incorrect let me know.

There is a front inspection cover on the trans that has been known to cause a rattle, if you have one take it off and put a slight bow in it in the middle and reinstall, see what happens.
FYI I think you have a 4r100 trans.

I do have a front inspection cover on the trans, I pulled it off a few weeks ago and bent it a little, made no difference. I thought about taking it off for a short drive to see if that made a difference.

Before dropping the tranny I would first check for rattles while in gear and then drop the tranny pan to look for symptoms.

Have some one you trust sit in the driver seat and put the tranny into drive while holding the brake and with the parking brake on. Wouldn't hurt to chock the wheels too. Do NOT let the dirver give it much if any gas since you don't want the truck to move, obvious but we all make dumb mistakes.

The crawl under the truck and listen for rattles. Of course AVOID MOVING parts. I often find that mounts rattle. Like, Running board mounts, Crash shields under the gas tank and other places, any aftermarket mounts. Exhaust hangers etc. Often they will only rattle in gear or at certain engine speeds.

The exhaust shields usually buzz or have a higher frequency rattle. They are tack welded in place and can easily crack loose. A hose clamps fixes them.

If you can't find the rattle or do localize it to the pan, then I would drop the tranny pan to check for debris, and fluid color and smell.

Sometimes things like smog pumps, alternators etc will make a rattle when the bearings are going bad.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I've decided to revise what it sounds like, instead of tin rattling in a can, I think its more like sand, if you had some sand in a can and was shaking it. Not sure if that makes any difference or not.

I have not figured it out yet, I have some broken bolts on the passenger side exhaust manifold. So, I was going to fix that 1st and see if that helped the noise any. I have not had time to do that fix yet -- trying to mentally get myself ready -- looks like it could be an interesting job.
