Does anyone know the symptoms of a BAD injector (stuck open)? My truck chugs black smoke when starting and continues to run RICH when at operating temp. I noticed black soot coming out between the exhaust manifold and the head on the #1 cylinder. I took out the spark plug and it VERY black.
You may want to pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator, and make sure there isn't any fuel in there. If there is, the regulator is bad.
And yes, that is a symptom of a possible bad injector, or excessive overfueling. If you unplug that injector from the wiring harness, and the smoke stops, it's electrical. Another test you may want to try, after ruling out the regulator, is a pressure drop test. Hook up a fuel pressure gauge, and turn the key on and off without starting the truck. The fuel pressure should remain constant for a while. If it drops fairly quick, then somewhere pressure is being lost.
