FYI: Jack Paar took over the Tonight Show in 1957, about 6 months after Steve Allen left. Until then, the Tonight Show was a variety program, musical numbers and comedy routines. It was Paar that started having guests on, and they'd sit there and chat. May sound boring today, but Paar invented a whole new form of programming that had everyone watching: the talk show. And guests went on just to TALK- today, the guests on Leno and Letterman are only there to promote their latest project. Paar's greatest talent (and he had many) was to get guests comfortable enough that they'd say things they normally wouldn't. Not sneaky or devious, never in-your-face like Mike Wallace on 60 minutes; just a friend you felt at ease with. He was probably most famous for literally walking off the show after a network censor bleeped out one of his jokes from the night before. Today, the joke seems tame, but in the 60's it was considered a little too dirty for the airwaves, so out it came. Paar was incensed, and left the show for a month. NBC eventually coaxed him back for a few more years, but he was willing to give up a LOT of money for his principles. Can you imagine any celebrity doing that today? Okay, I'll shut up now....
