Rear Tank Swap for OBS Ford

Fuel tank and pump setup for 38 gallon rear tank swap in an OBS Ford

Precision A47135 pump w. fuel sending unit

$170ish

Precision fuel tanks FT456 tank

$280ish

Use that part number so you don’t have to extend the fuel pickup lines like you used to with this swap. The precision tank is the same exact tank as the spectra f26e but it’s easier to find. You can get all of this at O’reillys auto parts.

Cut out the tank hole for the fuel sending unit’s tabs, then bend the unit’s pickup tubes until it comfortably fits in the tank, do the same with the float arm until it’ll read empty at rest and full when it’s fully extended. Then I’d recommend replacing the tank vent valve’s seal too.

After that wire the new pump plug in as follows:

Factory red to aftermarket gray

Factory black to aftermarket black/white

Factory blue/yellow to aftermarket purple

Factory orange to aftermarket black

Put the other tank stuff back together (like the filler neck etc.) and then use the hardware that came with the tank to extend the existing bottom straps or to extend the replaced bottom straps.

You should be done after that. Good luck 👍🏻

I swear that pump is too short. Sure, it will pump fuel, but not all of it.

I'm not there, I just did a quick Google search of the part number and it just does not look long enough.

It would be pretty close if not. Pump assembly is 17.1” long and tank is 13.75” deep. It goes in at an angle, but also isn’t mounted all the way to the top.

Did you need to fabricate any brackets for the straps to mount to or use factory locations? I know the Bronco conversation you have to make a cross bar for mounting from what I’ve seen.

The larger tank [Spectra F26E] came with everything I needed. No modifications with the factory mounting hardware.

I fit the pump in the tank yesterday and the strainer lands right in the bottom square in the bottom of the tank which is the lowest part so yes it is long enough. It has about 1/4-1/2” of clearance from the bottom which is perfect in my opinion.

If that wiring blurb on my original post doesn’t have the same color wires as the factory ones in your truck, this is another one that works on the older wiring harnesses like my 1992. The color matching that I originally wrote down was from a 1995 F150.Factory black/white to aftermarket gray

Factory black to aftermarket black/white

Factory blue/yellow to aftermarket purple

Factory orange to aftermarket black

How deep is that tank compared to the O.E. sized rear tank?

Deep enough you should not put the spare on. I will try and take a picture of mine.

Okay that is what I thought, I am going to single tank my '88 and just keep that 19gal. Sufficient capacity for just cruising about.

Towing a 5th wheel and getting 5 mpg was the reason I elected for the swap. The big issue was the spare tire. I still do not like leaving it in my bed and I have yet to figure out a good place to put it.

My 2001 Screw has a 24gal tank, so I can deal with lesser capacity that is for good around town. Cannot recall how much the 7.3 holds combined.

Good wiring pinouts OP, those seem different with each brand of pump and sender!
