I have a couple questions.
1.) The rear tank on my truck, I got all of the gas out, it was a nasty, red color, and smells terrible. The bottom of the tank and pump, covered in rust. What would cause that?
2.) What would be the best thing to use to clean out the fuel tanks?
My front tank was like that, but the pump hadnt worked for years. When I dropped the tank to investigate, I found nothing but disgustingness in the tank. I didnt even bother trying to clean it. I just replaced it. It was a varnish like goo all over everything. I think it was just from the bad gas sitting in there so long.
If your tank hasnt worked in a while, that may be a contributor. I have no idea how to go about cleaning it short of removing the tank.
Replace the tank, They make poly tanks that never rust. They even make a tank that makes a 2 tank truck 1 huge tank with no modifications. It uses all stock brackets and comes with sending unit and fuel pump. If one of mine ever goes bad I'm replacing mine with 1 big poly tank. I use my older truck to tow a camper sometimes and could use the extra gas capacity. I am going to do it on my new truck too this winter.
They make an aftermarket tank made out of poly material that fits in the space for both tanks and adds fuel capacity. I have the website on my home computer. I tried to find it (as I'm at work) and can't.
