Hey everyone. 2016 F350 6.7. I’ve had it about a year and I’d say maybe once every week or so when I go to start the truck, the starter would spin but it engage. Just make a whirring sound like they do when the bendix doesn’t engage the flywheel.
This last week I finally got myself to replace the starter (not easy on these) with an ACDelco reman and it’s the same. Actually worse. Now it’s every couple times. If I try repeatedly it will eventually engage which makes me think it’s probably (hopefully) not flywheel damage.
What am I looking at here? A defective new starter? Is that common? My batteries seem strong but I only have a 100 amp load tester. Since it happens with the truck hot I’m doubting battery issue.
New today doesn't mean good. The days of starter repair shops is slowly fading but if there's one near you have them rebuild your original starter with quality parts.
Found this on Xtreme Diesel's website for their brand of starter for the 6.7... link here.
On that page under Tech Notes, it explains to check all components of the electrical system including the cables, terminals batteries and more. It says depending on circumstances, starters can pull 500 Amps. And that if there's a problem with the system, it could cause a problem with the voltage, which if there is a problem >> high resistance >> which would cause low voltage to be supplied to the starter.
Also says that voltage measured at the starter during cranking should ALWAYS be above 11 volts...
