Transponder or Non-Transponder Key, How Do I Tell?
2003 F150, 4.6L Auto. Got it at an abandoned vehicle auction today for literally $50, nobody but me wanted to bid on it so heck yeah it was a good day! The bad part is no title or key. I can get a title, but before spending the time and money to do so, obviously it would be smart to see if it runs, or if it needs major work and parting it out would be better. I plan on drilling the ignition out and replacing with a new lock tumbler and key from RockAuto. RockAuto sells a Transponder key and a Non-Transponder key. What can I look at on the truck to tell if it had the transponder key or a “normal” key since I have no original key to reference? Is there a tell-tale something in the steering column or dash I can look for the presence of (or absence of) to determine if it had the “fancy” key or not?

Be careful on the brand. People sometimes have problems with the cheaper transponder keys. I notice that the Standard product is more expensive, and has the heart that shows it sells well. It seems worth the extra $20.
