2022 F250 6.2L — Passenger Side Tick + IMRC Unplugged Didn't Stop It
Hey all — hoping to get some input while I wait on a FORScan adapter to arrive.
Truck: 2022 F-250 6.2L V8, 42k miles (I am second owner, purchased at 32k miles)
Symptom: Developed a ticking noise on a recent trip. Noise is coming from the passenger side, front of the valve cover area. It increases with RPM/load but not strictly 1:1 with RPM — more like it gets louder as airflow/load increases. Also noticing an occasional slight rough idle, almost like an intermittent misfire, though not severe.
What I've checked so far:
Oil level and condition — full, clean, only 2k miles old
Unplugged the passenger side IMRC blue connector while running — tick did not stop
Checked for exhaust puffs along passenger manifold — nothing felt
Scanned with Foxwell NT301 — only a pending P0443 (likely from accidentally unplugging a black connector on the intake, unrelated). No misfire codes, no CEL.
Broken IMRC flapper (unplugging solenoid didn't stop it — flapper may be physically broken and rattling with airflow regardless of solenoid position)
Broken valve spring on passenger bank
Exhaust manifold leak passenger side
Bad coil/plug causing the misfire independently of the noise
FORScan adapter arrives tomorrow — plan is to check individual cylinder misfire counts, live oil pressure, fuel trims, and use active commands to force IMRC open/closed to test flappers definitively.
Has anyone seen this combination of symptoms on the 6.2L? Curious whether the misfire + tick together points to something specific in your experience. Also — does the noise in the video sound like IMRC flapper rattle or something more mechanical to you?
Pull the valve cover and check for a broken valve spring, will probably be a exhaust valve because it's not back firing into intake or causing major missfires like a intake valve will.

You are probably right. Luckily, I am still under the 60k powertrain warranty and so this should be 100% covered. Will drop it off with them and report back.

I had this on my 2019. I thought all the things you have checked...
Ironically I was about to make 4 or 5 round trips Nj to Fla. Pulling a 20 foot cargo trailer, and had new spark plugs installed. I had told them everything new. Plugs and wires. They decided they were saving me money by not replacing the wires.
I was not happy about that as the cost of wires isnt worth a problem at 2am in Ga somewhere.
Truck now has 80k.had approx 75k at the time this happened. All 5k oil changes. Mostly used as a commuter with 20 mile trips each way. So I found it hard to believe mechanical issues like lifters etc.
I found out what it was by accident. The radio had reset to an AM station. I had the truck idling. And I heard a buzz... I worked the throttle and the buzz followed the engine rpm... meaning for me a spark plug issue.
I had them replace all the wires. Ticking issue solved.
What had happened was the tech pulled on the boot to get it off when replacing the plugs. I forget what number it was but it was a particular pain in the ase. There is a metal protective collar as the plug is way recessed. However it happened the metal boot was shorting against the wire.
I think it showed up on the scanner as well. I cant remember. But I think maybe a code for intermittant ignition fail on that cyl.
I really hope that helps brother... much rather replace plugs and wires than internal engine parts!
Make sure you give us an update when you solve your issue.
I dont know about others but I plan on keeping my truck until Im too old to climb up into it... given some of the issues facing new vehicle buyers these days.

I have an update. Picked my truck back up yesterday - drove the kids today to school - no more knock. The issue was actually a spark plug wire that came loose and was arcing. All they did was snap it back on. I feel like a total doofus but at least it was not a major issue.

I went through all the same emotions and was so relieved it was something stupid.
It really is amazing how it sounds. It really sounds like a mechanical issue.

Man, I was just about to respond to your original post when i read this post. I did a full replacement of plugs, wires and coil boots on my truck and had the same ticking noise. Turns out I had not fully seated the rear most plug wire on the passenger side and it was clickity-clacking. After finding my mistake, and properly seating the boot on the plug, the ticking stopped.
It's always nice when you find a simple fix to a problem that seems like it may be a big deal. LOL
